Travel| 5 Places I’d Rather Have Been In 2020

The past few months haven’t been the easiest for any of us, unless you’re Kim Kardashian and you flew all your friends and family for a private island vacation (if you’re reading this Kim – I want to be friends!!). But definitely this year was harder in a few countries (read as: India, US) with the wide spread of the pandemic. While things have gotten better in a lot of countries, here’s my list of places I’d rather have been living in during this pandemic. The main criteria for choosing these places is 1. How beautiful and serene these places are as well as 2. The not so widespread of the pandemic in these places (obviously no place was unscathed but these places were able to control the spread due to efficient leadership and their remoteness).

Here’s my list:

NEW ZEALAND

The way this country has tackled the pandemic is praise worthy (kudos to their government). Add to it the beauty of the country on the whole. I would have loved spending this pandemic time exploring the beautiful places around NZ. The whole country is like one giant postcard – beautiful scenery, pristine nature and less people. For adrenaline junkies, they have bungee jumping and sky diving over THE most beautiful places.

BALI

Bali currently has very few active COVID cases. With their tourism on a low right now – a lot of beautiful properties are available for much cheaper right now. I would have loved to Work From Bali for a couple of months spending time properly exploring this beautiful island. I visited Bali for a week in 2017 and absolutely fell in love! It is the perfect place – from beautiful mountains to pristine beaches, from adventurous volcano hikes to insane paragliding on a beach, from beautiful five star beach properties to gorgeous bamboo villas in the middle of fields! I always thought about going back to Bali for a month or two and this time with lesser people on the island would have been perfect. Adding to the beauty of the island – the amazing food available including a lot of vegan options – making it the perfect place for me. (Follow Siobhan & Joe on IG to follow their life in Bali during this pandemic. PC: them!)

ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS

I loved my visit to these islands and felt like I didn’t get enough time (one week) to explore them to the fullest. It would have been nice to spend a few months here – exploring the various islands leisurely and have a total cultural immersion. I am a beach bum and hence, beach locations are high on my bucket list especially the not-so-crowded beaches. Again, corona cases have been very few here (less than 250 in total!!).

ICELAND

Iceland has been on the TOP of my bucket list for the past few years. I had planned on travelling to Iceland this year end to spend a few weeks exploring this beautiful country. But I think I’d have loved to spend a few months here – see how the place changes from summer to winters. I hate doing trips where I’m rushing through the places – this would have been a great time to just this majestic country – stay in log cabins in the middle of woods, do beautiful hikes, explore waterfalls, go whale watching and eventually chase the northern lights! Again, another country that has controlled the spread of the coronavirus.

CANADA

Only because this country is so beautiful. Every single time I see a photo of a beautiful location on IG, it turns out the place is in Canada. I would have loved to spend time exploring this country. – hiking through the forests, kayaking in the beautiful lakes, visiting snow capped peaks as well as just enjoying city life in Toronto. Additional benefit, Justin Trudeau is so gorgeous. ❤

Bonus photo ❤

How have the past few months been in your country? If you could have spent the past few months in some other place – where would you have chosen to spend them? 🙂

Take care!

Totally jealous! Did you do any local travel during the past few months?! Canada looks so breathtakingly beautiful in photos posted on IG. I recently saw on IG that Chronicles of Narnia was shot in the Banff Springs Hotel. I googled photos and it looks so dreamy. 😍

      1. We live in the Rocky Mountains so we’ve been hiking a lot. We planned to go to the east coast, but there were travel restrictions. Still, having to spend the time in our lovely mountains was not difficult. I didn’t know Narnia was filmed at Banff Springs. It is an impressive building in person too, so one day you need to visit. we live about an hour away from it.

I’m sure! I can’t wait to visit Canada. My brother is studying in Victoria – I’m planning a visit when he graduates in 2022. Will definitely visit Banff and get other recommendations from you! 🙂

  7. Oh, good picks. I cannot agree with you more on Bali. It is simply magic. It is one of my favorite places on the planet and even if I have lived there long, I do not tire of it. Like you, I have been dreaming of Iceland, too. A classmate from our yoga teacher training was from there and my enthusiasm just doubled. Hopefully next year we can all travel again!

I’d def would go to Bali. 😭 In reality I’ve been spending 2020 in Sweden. Which is honestly not the worst place to be.

      Bali is ♥️.
Sweden is probably the only country I know that didn’t lockdown. So I’m guessing life hasn’t changed much for you?

You’re right! However, university moved online which always has prons and cons. Also, life hasn’t changed much but the fact that we are only asked to keep distance and stay home if we’re sick, puts all the responsibility on us to keep ourselves safe. So one can always argue whether it’s good or bad. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh I didn’t know university moved online! My friend is working in Stockholm and he mentioned that his toddler’s school was still on – so I assumed nothing has shut! I would have hated if I couldn’t attend university – best days of my life. 🙂

It’s just been so crazy for us here in India – we had a lockdown for over 2 months and even after most places were shut for a long time. Thankfully life is crawling back to normalcy now – with masks and social distancing! 🙂

Sorry to hear that. 💔 I hope it keeps getting better! Meanwhile Sweden is getting more and more new cases as the weather is starting to become colder.

Thailand has such pretty beaches. Also, with no tourists – it must have been way more peaceful. But Hawaii – ❤ !! I've never been to Hawaii but it looks so beautiful in photos. Hope your mom voted! The election drama has me hooked. 😀

Hahahaha. She voted for the first time in almost 50 years she has lived there 😛

I love Hawaii. Thailand’s not the same, but it’s been home for many years and maybe I’ll look back and appreciate it more then.

I’ve only been to the super commercial places (Bangkok & Phuket) in Thailand – so I didn’t love it especially in comparison to Bali. But the quainter beaches look dreamy though they aren’t high on my bucket list. But Hawaii has been a dream since I was younger mainly because most American novels used to make Hawaii sound like the THE vacation spot. 😀

Old America definitely idolizes Hawaii. It’s actually quite popular with the Japanese (and probably these days, the Chinese too). 😛

I had a few pre-booked holidays cancelled this year (as I’m know many of us have), so this post was a nice bit of escapism. I’m already planning all the places I want to go to when we’re able to travel freely again. Iceland is also on my bucket list!
