My Holiday Run-up Watchlist

I LOVE CHRISTMAS! Visiting Rockefeller Center on Christmas day has been my dream forever (ever since I saw Home Alone). A lot of my obsession with Christmas arises from how romanticized it is in books and movies. From the March sisters having a lean Christmas to Harry receiving his father’s Invisibility Cloak to the scene in the movie Love Actually when Mark confesses his feelings to Juliet under the guise of carolers to Ross (in FRIENDS) dressing up as the holiday armadillo for Ben to Sara and Jonathan finding love in New York in Serendipity. *Sigh* Christmas is the season of love – all kinds of love and so much joy. Here’s a complication of movies and shows, old and new that I’m going to watch in the run-up to Christmas and the beautiful new year (2021 – I have hopes from you).

1. Dash & Lily (Netflix)

I binged watched this show last week to get into the holiday spirit. Christmas, love and NYC – everything screams holiday spirit! The show is only 8 episodes long and is a teenage rom-com with a lot of drama. But it did what it had to and got me excited about Christmas!

2. Holiday Home Makeover With Mr.Christmas (Netflix)

I LOVE home makeover shows – I’ve binged watched most of them on Netflix. This 5 episode Holiday Home Makeover show sounds promising though my first thought was – “wait, they have a show on THAT, really?” But if you’re looking for home decoration ideas or just gape at beautifully done up homes – join me in binge watching this show!

3. All FRIENDS Christmas episodes (Netflix)

Christmas month and the run up to Christmas has to be special and heart warming. FRIENDS isn’t a show I regularly re-watch anymore (after having rewatched every episode atleast 100 times!) so I save the rewatching for special days. I’ll spend the first week of December, rewatching all the Christmas episodes from FRIENDS (there are 9). The best part about these episodes are that Christmas isn’t the focal point of the entire episode and it feels so realistic and relatable since adulting is always on the front burner.

4. Harry Potter Movie Marathon (Amazon Prime)

There’s just something about watching the Harry Potter movies all snuggled up with a cup of hot cocoa that just makes me feel very festive. I usually prefer revisiting Hogwarts by book but this time of the year I let myself snuggle in and watch my favourite Harry Potter movies.

So dreamy!

5. Serendipity

Around mid-December, I start re-watching a lot of classic movies that have Christmas-y moments that make me go “awwwww”. Serendipity is one such movie. If you haven’t watched it – it’s a rom-com which is set in NYC (yeah, pretty cliched). But the story is so cute it is bound to get you out of your Grinchy mood and Christmas ready.

6. The Christmas Chronicles – 2 (Netflix)

First of all, I love Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. They are one of the cutest Hollywood couples ever. And they portray Mr. & Mrs. Klaus! I’m sure this movie is targetting kids but I am a total kid during this time of the year. This movie is one of my top new picks for Christmas this year.

Look how cute these two are. ♥️

7. Holidate (Netflix)

Holidays can be tough for single people – meeting your families and being asked the same questions about your abysmal love life. Holidate is a rom-com about two singles who decide to pretend date during the holidays to avoid the perennial awkward questions from their families and friends. This is probably the only time of the year when I tolerate such cliched movies but I love Emma Roberts and I’m definitely giving this movie a watch.

8. Sex and The City (The Movie) (Netflix)

I’m not a fan of this movie series – but I only rewatch a 5 minute sequence in the movie. Yup, I’m weird. It’s New Year’s Eve – Carrie is asleep even before midnight. She’s seperated from Big. Miranda is also alone since she’s seperated from her husband. Miranda calls Carrie to vent and on a whim Carrie rushes all the way across NY to meet her best friend while ‘Auld Lang Syne’ plays in the background. This is such a perfect moment – that is a true portrayal of their friendship. They are each other’s soulmates. Yes, I also get very cheesy during Christmas.

“You’re not alone!” ♥️

9. Love Actually

This is THE movie I watch on Christmas. It is another rom-com but it is so cute. Funnily for someone who raves about Christmas in NYC, my final pick is a movie based in London. If you haven’t watched Love Actually (are you living under a rock?) – give it a try this Christmas – you’re going to love it. It’s a bunch of love stories playing out together. The best part is that they’ve tried to cover different types of love stories. *Sigh* Can’t wait to watch this (again) on Christmas Eve.

These were my picks for my holiday playlist. What are some movies that you watch around the holiday season? Leave your recommendations and maybe I’ll try watching something new this Christmas. 😊

Stay safe and make merry! ♥️

PS: for the movie that I haven’t linked to Netflix/Prime – they aren’t available on those platforms in India but might be available if you’re living in a different country.

FRIENDS just portrays Christmas so realistically. Like I love how it isn’t over done but just a part of their daily adulting lives. 😊
