Short Story| Intertwined Souls

Background: I wrote this story way back in 2016. I was in college and had a crush on this boy that I just couldn’t get myself to talk to. We did talk a little but I was TOO awkward to really make a move. So I wrote this story about our awkward encounters. It is NOT perfect but it is so sappy and cute that I just feel like sharing it. If you’ve ever been young – awkward and had a crush on someone – I’m hoping it will remind you of that time. I haven’t improved on it – just an FYI.

Intertwined Souls

She watched as he took a seat a few rows away from where she sat in the classroom. She adjusted her spectacles and on the pretext of looking around gave him a long look. As her friends joined her, she quickly looked away before they would notice the lovelorn expression on her face. As the class started, she sighed inwardly. Her thoughts were all a mess and her heart was missing a few beats. She forced herself to focus on what the teacher was saying but her head behaved like it was attached to a spring, forcing her to look his way to get a glance of that face that intrigued her beyond her imagination.

As the class ended, she slowly packed her bag. From the corner of her eyes she watched as he spoke to his friend. The words flowing out of his mouth seemed to add pieces to the puzzle that was him. She tried to get up from her seat but her brain froze as he floated past her. She waited till he reached the front of the class before she started breathing again. The classroom was almost empty by then. She watched his back as he walked away. Then almost as if in a dream he slowly turned around and their eyes met for a few seconds as he left the room. She couldn’t believe it, he did know she existed. Happiness pumped with the blood through her body. She had spent the last 4 weeks completely obsessing about him. Involuntarily, a big smile spread across her face as she rested against the table to get a grip on her emotions. Her friend’s voice snapped her out of her dream world and she joined them to go for lunch.

As she looked up from her laptop screen, she was mesmerized as her demi-god walked into the library. She watched as he looked around to choose a table to sit on. Her heart hoped he would choose her table but her mind feared her reaction if he did choose to sit with her. As his search led him to her table, she quickly looked away to her laptop. As she counted seconds in her head, she thought about how good he looked in black. She felt like she was back in high school. She felt silly. Yet, she couldn’t stop the butterflies in her stomach. She was snapped out of her thoughts by a voice. As she slowly raised her head, she stared at the mystery in front of her. He snapped his fingers in front of her and she realized that she had been gaping at him. She quickly pulled out the earplugs and nodded as he asked to join her on the table. She tried to tell her heart to stop racing but it did anyway. She hid behind her laptop screen and tried to calm her nerves. His voice still echoed in her head. She forced her thoughts back to the case presentation that she was working on. She plugged in her earphones and tried read her case notes. Her mind was a mess of thoughts as it ran back between him and the marketing problem in front of her.  She tapped her pen impatiently on her notepad as she started working. A half hour later, as she worked diligently, she felt someone stare at her. She looked up and found his piercing black eyes staring at her curiously. She removed her earphones and asked him if everything was okay. He looked at her with an amusing smile and asked her if she wanted to grab coffee from the canteen. She tried to curb her surprise and nodded wordlessly.

As they walked out of the library towards the canteen, she looked up towards the moon. The night was breezy and a full moon shined down on them. After a brief silence, he finally asked her if her vocal chords were functional. Surprised, she laughed and introduced herself. Soon, they started talking and the 5 minute coffee break extended for over an hour. She slowly started putting together the pieces of the puzzle that had her befuddled for the last few weeks. She noticed other things about him. The smile that lit up his face when he talked about music. The way his smile was a little crooked at the corner. The way his eyebrows arched when they discussed books. And how the sound of his laughter sounded musical. As she noticed the time on her phone, she hurriedly returned to the library to complete the work that she had left incomplete even though a part of her wanted their discussion to never end. As she settled in front of her laptop screen she forced her mind to focus on nothing but the work at hand.

He watched her work with concentration that intrigued him. It had been an hour since they had returned from their coffee break and he couldn’t wait for her work to finish. He wanted to resume their conversation. He wanted to tell her so many more things and he wanted to hear her stories. As he waited for her, he didn’t realize that he had been staring at her. He noticed how her mouth curved as she tried to read something. He noticed how her eyes widened as she thought of something. He felt so intrigued. He felt like a string pulled at him, pulling me towards her. He had felt this pull only once before. Like gravity. Like a magnetic pull. Like his heart was pulling him towards his destiny. Like he was at the right time at the right place with the right person. That pull that he ignored as he left the class that morning. That pull that he finally gave in to when he chose her table to sit on in the library. That pull that had forced him to talk to her. That pull that forced his eyes to observe her every tiny detail. That pull that wanted to talk to her all night long. That pull. He smiled looking at her and returned to reading his book.

What did you think of the story? I know it is really cheesy but I just found it too cute to not share. Have you ever had a crush on someone and you were too awkward to act on it?

You call it cheesy, but not once did I cringe! It was so cute and you nailed how unintentionally self-conscious one becomes in the presence of someone they’re drawn to. If you have a part 2, I’m looking forward to it! 💙

Hahaha. It’s fiction. I did have a crush on a guy and some bits are picked from that – like the beginning but the library and thereafter didn’t happen. He was really nice and we talked but I used to get SO awkward in front of him – totally embarrassing. 🙈

What a sweet story! I can see signs of a budding writer! 😉 Hmm awkward crushes? My whole teens and 20s were full of awkward crushes! I think only once I had the nerve to approach someone and asked them out (after initiating some chatter). It was totally unlike me (I think he let me down nicely, said he had a girlfriend or something) but it felt empowering to take matters in my own hand- rejection or not! 😉

Awww. I wish I had asked this crush out – but I was SO awkward that I’d just start stuttering and stammering. He was really sweet though.
