This is going to be a short post considering I barely read anything this month. With everything that happened this month, reading was extremely low on my list of to-do activities. I instead chose to spend my free time watching re-runs of comfort shows like Gilmore Girls, Modern Family and The Middle. If you’re wondering what happened this month – I launched my business at the beginning of the month only for India to go into lockdown with it’s worst case of COVID yet. Hence, my total book count for the month is 1. The book I read was Romanov by Nadine Brandes.

The Romanov family was the last imperial dynasty to rule Russia. The Tsar Nicholas abdicated the throne after large unrest across the country. The entire family were brutally murdered by a firing squad in the middle of the night by the revolutionary army fearing that their supporters were gaining in number.

PLOT: The novel is a fictional story revolving around the Romanov family. Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov, the youngest daughter of the newly ousted Tsar is given a spell by her father that will help protect their family and their lineage. She is to use it at the right time to ensure her family’s safety from the dangers that loom over them in exile in the form of the Bolshevik army. The Bolshevik army is hunting down all spell masters and she must use her incomplete spell training to ensure her family’s well being.

REVIEW: I really enjoyed the novel. I liked how it kept faithful to the real story but included some variations that weren’t too implausible to happen. I had expected a book based on a real story but with a fantastical angle of magic to fall flat but instead found myself gripped with interest on what would happen next. It was an easy read and if you are interested in historical fiction, you should definitely give this book a read.
