Confessions of a Blogaholic

I’ve been blogging for over a year now and I am hooked. I spend a lot of time everyday on the WP app – it has become a ritual to check my WP app like I check my fridge when I’m bored. Having spent some time here, I do have some secrets – some spicy, some fun and some factual. Here are my confessions –

1. I don’t like some bloggers. There I said it. I’m obviously not going to name them but there are some bloggers that I don’t really like for totally immature reasons (considering I barely know them). But it’s not all lovey dovey in the blogging world.

2. My stats disappoint me. This isn’t about being hard on myself. I get a lot of comments about the number of followers I have and to be totally honest it throws me off because my stats and my follower count don’t really match up.

3. I don’t follow a lot of bloggers. I can’t follow someone just for the sake of it. There has to be something about that blog that interests me – the content, the writing or the blogger. I only follow a blog after I’ve read 4-5 posts and know that I’m going to enjoy reading future content.

Photo by Vlada Karpovich on Pexels.com

4. I feel jealous of other bloggers. I feel two types of jealousy – one, when a blogger writes something spectacular and I wish I could write as well as them and second, when a blogger’s average posts gets a lot of likes and comments. It’s not something that happens often but it does happen and I am so embarrassed to admit it.

5. I really adore some bloggers. It’s totally crazy since I haven’t met anyone from this blogging world but the interactions I’ve had with a few have made them a permanent part of my heart. I truly hope I get to meet these beautiful people at some point in the future.

Photo by Anna Shvets on Pexels.com

6. I don’t share my blog posts with family and friends. Haha. I just feel like I’m a different person on here. I’m more real here and I have very few filters. I like keeping this part of my life away from the other part of my life. Funnily, a few of my friends who do know about my blog often find out things about me from the blog.

7. This blog has been such a good influence on me. From making me write more to making me get back to reading to helping me on days when I want to vent to finding motivation in other blogger’s posts to just helping me make friends.

Photo by Daria Shevtsova on Pexels.com

8. There are some types of content that I don’t enjoy reading at all. I am going to get a lot of hate for this. I don’t enjoy reading posts that are overtly religious (I am agnostic). I also am not the biggest fan of blogger interviews – I get it is a great way to promote each other but reading the same questions answered by different types of bloggers just isn’t fun for me. (I love promoting fellow bloggers and I do quarterly blogger recommendation posts. Check them out here – part 1 & part 2) I also avoid shopping haul posts mainly because I’m being more conscious about the content I consume because I’m trying to be more sustainable.

I spilled the tea! Now its your turn. What are your confessions? 😀

PS: I broke my phone screen today morning – so I’m really sad. Post some fun confessions to cheer me up. :(

Read my other posts and show them some love (they are less bitchy, I promise 😀 )

Even I don’t share my blogs with my family. There was a time when I posted very sad and depressed poems consecutively and the last thing I wanted was my family to read them! I also relate to the point where you said an average blog post getting a lot of likes. I feel like there are some others blogs who actually who deserve those likes but don’t get it. I related to almost all of these, if I wrote my blogging confessions, my post would have been much similar to you!

Same – I used this space to vent about how I was feeling and hence didn’t feel like sharing it with my family. I think some people are really good at networking and that helps to get more likes. 🙂 🙂

  2. Omg this is good and juicy, thanks for sharing! Hmmm confessions, I would say, I agree with all that you wrote and yes, sometimes I judge and dislike certain bloggers. I actually stopped following a few bc even tho their blogs were beautiful, their posts always seemed to be so negative and kind of always seemed to trash talk and judge other bloggers. It felt like the Mean Girls movie to me, so I didn’t want that negative vibe. Your point about not sharing with your friends and fam is so fascinating! Can I ask what is your zodiac sign? Also, u are SOOOO one of the bloggers I adore and hope to meet someday 💖🤣🌺🌈

Haha! I also unfollowed a few bloggers who pretend to know it all and have it all together. 😀 But the ones that I dislike the most are the ones that randomly like 20 posts of yours and flood your notifications and then disappear forever! 😀

      I’m a Libra (October born). 🙂

Yessss, I hope I get to meet you some day too! ❤

Once my dad read one of my blogs and started suggesting to me what else I could have included in my blog. I took his words but I felt really shy and awkward in that conversation, I really don’t know why. From that point in time, I’ve stopped sharing my blogs with my family. (And non of my friends bother to read, they are not very good people😏)
Well, I could relate to most of the confessions you’ve made here.

Hahahh – my friends are THE same. When I started I used to diligently share ALL my posts with them but hardly any bothered reading it. 😀 😀
And sameee – my mum gave me some suggestions on some posts and then I was like – yaa, no need to read them anymore. 😀 😀

  4. Haha, what a great post and with so much to relate to. I’ve been here about 18 months and can still recall wondering how long I would do it for and I have surprised myself that I have – almost – stuck to my original intent of a post a week. I still enjoy it but, like you, have my issues too 😉
I read endless posts about blog traffic and content but they are almost all so formulaic as to be useless. As for traffic itself, I am yet to discover any correlation between followers/views /likes/comments. Honestly, I can’t see any and so I have stopped looking.
I try to read the posts of everyone I follow – some make me smile or are enjoyable to read and sometimes I am blown away by the quality of writing here. Some folks I have unfollowed because what I thought was a one-off post turned not to be so and all manner of conspiracy theories were being espoused. Same with some over the overly-judgemental preachy type posters. I love that there is space for everyone on WP but equally I am glad I can filter what I see far better than on other social apps such as FB or Twitter. Keep blogging! 🙂

    1. Happy Panda says:

The thing with following all the things to increase traffic is that it takes the fun away from blogging and makes it feel more like work to me.
That is a great point – it is unlike other social media in terms of filtering – I didn’t think of it that way.
Thank you 🙂 I hope to do another confession post a year from now – once the flak I receive for this one dies down 😀 😀

      1. Agreed, there would never be enough hours in the day if you followed everyone. I usually don’t follow until I have read a body of posts that give me an idea of the type of content they put out and how often. I noticed there was a glut of new accounts a few months back that all had the same first few posts about “what’s on my desk’! So, I assumed they were bots 😦
Yup, I do like that we can filter who and largely what we see here 😉
        Stay well! 🙂

  5. I also don’t share my blog with my family and friends. I’m surrounded by a lot of unsupportive people and I talk about personal stuff on my blog. It’s better that they don’t know about it.

There are no bloggers that I’ve met that I don’t like, but there are some whose content I get tired of. One blogger who I know posts almost exclusively sponsored content. It makes me feel like her posts are insincere because someone is paying her to write all of the topics and she’s not writing from the heart. I’m sure some will disagree but that’s how I feel.

    Liked by 3 people

    1. Happy Panda says:

Wow – I wish I’d get an opportunity to do sponsored content. 😀 But I get how it could feel like the content isn’t genuine. I feel that with a lot of youtubers – especially since a lot aren’t upfront about what is sponsored and what isn’t.

I used to share it with my family and friends because I used to think that no one else will read my content but now that people do – I don’t bother sharing it. 🙂

Also, I hate it when people follow you and tell tou to follow them back and then they just forget about it. Like you have around a 1000 followers but only around 2/10 th of them ever like our comment and it’s the same case with me too
And yes as everyone said you’re one of the best bloggers I know💜

hahaha – why are our friends like that? 😀 😀

The engagement rate is very low! I know my 70-80 off blogging fam will show up in the comments as soon as I post but the rest is SO varying!

Awww, thank you so much! I think you are one of my favourites too – to read and interact with. ❤

  7. I check WordPress a crazy amount too, I probably would save a lot of time in my day if I didn’t but it’s hard not to. I think that jealousy is a feeling that every blogger has probably felt at least once – it’s natural. Especially when you make good content but have much less followers than people who post really silly content. I’ve definitely felt that before too. I’m close to my blogger friends too – REALLY close. I feel much closer to the people on here than I do with my friends in real life for some reason. I guess it’s because bloggers tend to spill their inner most thoughts more, like you’ve just done. My confession: I have one or two blogger crushes. What? Don’t blame me 😊

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Happy Panda says:

OMG! Blogger crushes! I wanna know more!!!! Is it a crush on their personalities or their writing? It’s going to sound stupid but I’ve always wanted to have a blogger crush – just to keep things fun here – but I haven’t interacted with anyone that I’d crush on. 😀 😀

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yeah, it’s a crush on them. If their blog doesn’t have a picture of them on it then I guess I’m just in love with their writing and personality. I never saw it that way I guess. But most of them do have pictures.

  12. Omg I can relate.
I can 100 percent relate to not sharing this with friends and family, I don’t exactly want them to know what I do on the blog, since it’s like my online safe space, where no one judges me. I understand the whole statistics thing as well, it’s genuinely frustrating, like once you return from a small break the stats are down to zero, so it actually takes a lot of work running the blog and a lot of time. Blogging is in no way easy, and people keep talking about earning from it, I highly doubt that as well!

  17. This is really good and relatable. I still haven’t come across bloggers that I absolutely don’t like. But generally, I don’t like the ones that just use the comments section just to shamelessly promote their own blog without reading a single word of what I’ve written.
Don’t worry about stats and followers not matching. I’ve been blogging for well over six years now. I’ll let you in on something – it’s probably never going to match. But all that matters is that you have a community who read your posts consistently. There are a lot of people who just follow and forget. It makes me wonder why they would do such a thing.
I tend to read multiple posts by a blogger before I decide whether to follow the blog or not. It has to be interesting to me.
It’s human nature to wonder why our own posts are not getting much attention while someone else’s mediocre posts get so much attention.
I share my blog with my family. I make sure that I nag them, especially my husband, until he reads it and guides his comments 🤣
I adore a lot of bloggers too. The community is too good.

The stats and follower counts don’t add up because many people who follow have no intention of reading any of our posts. I don’t understand that. All I can assume is that they’re hoping to get a follow back when they do that. One thing that you didn’t mention is the folks who come along and like 6-7 posts in the same minute. Now that’s speed reading.🤣 Do they not think we’ll notice?

There are too many blogs out there not to be selective. There are only so many hours in the day.

One thing I wanted to add… WordPress eats my time. Yeah, I follow only a few blogs purely based on my interests, but it’s difficult to resist reading them all when personal schedule is already squeezing. If I don’t read, at times, I feel guilty of having let down my regular readers. However, I stop to comment only when I’m actually free. I’m not sure if I’m the only one who’s feeling this way.

Hahah! I am so glad you relate! I was half afraid that I was going to get a lot of flak for this! 😀

It is so much easier to just be yourself when its away from people that you know!

  27. Hard agree with everything u said. My family doesn’t know that I blog and I am too self conscious to show them🙈. I also didnt want to follow some bloggers whose contents I wasnt interested to read but I did it anyway because I used to do it anyway because I thought as a new blogger it’s necessary to do. I am still very confused about this part of blogging. Sometimes they will read my post and comment on it and follow me and I do the same with them. But I hardly see them reacting to my post after that. It’s like they only read my post to get me to follow them. It’s hard to know people online.

That is true. It takes a few months to understand it all. I was fairly confused for the first 6 months too. I’d follow back a lot of people who’d follow me but now I only follow people with content that I enjoy reading. It took time but now I have a core blogging family of 50-60 people that I know I can count on – so I don’t bother following back. I’m sure you’ll get there soon too. ❤ ❤

My family and friends do not know about my blog, it’s like I live a secret life lol. I don’t really like when people spam like all of my posts and then comment for me to do it back, it feels like they don’t care about my content but just want their stats to go up. You hit the nail on the head with every single confession, this was a great read!

I know! It annoys me more when they leave multiple comments asking me to check out their blogs. I usually do that anywho when a new person interacts with me but this just bugs me so much!

There are also these 3-4 bloggers who like my comments on all other blogger’s posts but don’t interact with me directly ever. 😀

  32. Oh dear, I hope you get your phone screen fixed up soon! For me there’s nothing more embarrassing than having someone in the family read my post out loud. That will always be awkward and I’ll tell them to please read in their head lest I die of embarrassment!

I’m also disappointed with my stats, honestly. I don’t know what it is. How can over a thousand people follow yet fail to engage? It’s just awkward but much worse on Instagram. Over here though, It’s not a matter of algorithm. I guess it depends on how many other people your followers follow and therefore how high (or low) you end up on the priority list.

Your list is super honest. I admire you for being able to own them up… it is pretty healthy to acknowledge these facts…. I liked how you accept being insecure with your stats and being jealous of some bloggers, believe me, this happens to the best of us. But yes, it’s the good kind of jealously…

I too don’t share my blog to family and real life friends for reasons that well, I often write about them. But it’s just there, no secret, it’s up to them to discover plus I don’t write bad stuff about them, I write anecdotes 🙂

Something stressful happened to me the entire 2020 til first qtr of 2021, I ghosted everyone I know IRL, when they finally saw me active again online (messenger), everyone asked me as to why I hibernated… (they knew I do that when something is wrong)… I had to share them a blog post that detailed everything I had to endure during my absence on socmed (to avoid having to explain things one by one)… so in just one sitting, they got to read my narrative of the past yr — my blog is no longer a secret though.

Same – I often share things about my family or friends and it isn’t really a secret but I prefer if they don’t read any of it to make me feel less conscious when sharing stories about them.

Oh. I hope things are better now and that you’re feeling less stressed out. I’ll definitely checkout your blog to know more but if you need to talk to a totally anonymous person – I’m here. ❤️

This is so funny😂God Moksha -I broke my phone screen couple of months ago and now I am living with my battered screen, although I got used to it now😂

I agree with everything -one especially that gets on my nerves are stats (number of followers don’t match the engagements -not even close) I gave up now, I am just floating on WP app🤷🏽‍♀️🌼 xx

My screen stopped working all together + lockdown meant I couldn’t get another one or get this repaired. I’ve finally gotten a spare phone today. So yayay! Dreading the cost of fixing up my old phone – if the prices online are right. 🥺

So I’ve gotten to a point where my stats don’t bother me but so many people leave comments that hint at the 1000+ followers I have and it makes me feel very conscious. 🙈

Don’t be! It’s your writing that makes all the difference. I don’t know about you but for me -when my words have an impact on even one person -it makes everything worth it. And I got to say -this is me every time I read any of your post and I am sure it’s the same case for so many others. Full of beautiful tales infused with humour🧡

  36. I appreciate your honesty…just don’t know how jealousy serves you. Years ago, I travelled to Ireland to attend the Yeats School in Sligo. One night, a group of us found our way to a community gathering (I think in a barn, which was hot due to the crowd’s body heat). The room was electric, as different members of the crowd sang songs and played traditional Irish music. What I loved about it was that not everyone could sing perfectly, or even on key. After each person performed, the crowd roared, laughed and stomped their feet. It was so different from America, where perfection is exalted. I sort of think the blogosphere is like that. Different topics, different levels of talent, but I love how people put their hearts and minds out there, connecting with others, in a world where community and making connections seem harder everyday. There’s something so beautiful about just the effort that makes me happy.

I think jealousy isn’t always bad – sometimes its good especially if it motivates you to do better. At least that’s what it does for me! 😊

Hahah. Some random followers can be annoying – they like 10 posts, drop a random comment and disappear into a black hole. 🤣

You’ll find your blogging fam soon – it took me a few months. But it is amazing to have them around, cheering you on. 😊

  38. I guess blogging comes as a package with ups and downs. I think is absolutely normal to like some bloggers and their topics and to like less other bloggers and their topics. Personally I see this blogosphere as a perfect point to meet people all around the world that may have my same hobbies 😁 And that’s wonderful! Don’t be too harsh with yourself! Enjoy it until the internet is working 😉

Hahah true! I personally don’t like bloggers who beg for attention – with liking all my posts in under a minute to dropping comments asking me to check their blog without reading my post – it’s just annoying. 🙈

But I’ve made so many friends here – friends I hope to meet some day – so I agree, blogging is a wonderful world.

I loved this post, and all its honesty! My confession would be that I dread the “blog hopping”: visiting other people’s blogs to read articles – not because I don’t like it (as I matter of fact I really love reading other people’s blogs), but because I don’t do it very regularly so when I do find some time for it, I end up with 20+ tabs opened for a few days and it is very overwhelming! I also don’t share my blog with friends and family, and some of my friends don’t even know that I have a blog! 😊

I have allocated specific time in the day just to go through other people’s posts but it still gets overwhelming on some days when im short on time – so I totally get it. On bad days – I skim through blogs. Shhh. 🙈

Oh, I can relate. Especially with the jealousy when I see a beautifully written post and I am fully aware of the fact that I probably would not be able to create anything of similar quality. English is technically my second language. Fair enough, I started learning when I was 3 years old, but I did not live in an English speaking country until I was 20-something. Oh well, no point in being sad about it but still… 😅

  41. Keeping this blog life separate is my choice as well. I feel this is my personal space where I pour my heart without any filters. You know how we have to keep the filters on otherwise in family and friends.. but yes, I will admit, in the beginning, I used to share my posts with my friends and used to force them to read like I was looking for some validation and appreciation. But not any more..My blog is my personal space and I don’t need anybody’s appreciation or validation. I feel satisfied writing here and even the minimum likes I get makes feel good.

  42. I kind of have the opposite problem: I share my blog posts with friends and family but they rarely ever read or like or comment on any of my posts, which used to hurt my feelings. But now that I’m creating friendships within the blogging community, it doesn’t hurt as much. Great post!
