Almost There

They looked at each other from across the room,

Exhaustion reeked from their messed up hair.

He quietly walked out to find the broom,

She slouched back, drowning further into the living room couch.

While her mind ran despite how tired it was,

His arms worked hard despite how heavy they felt.

Cleaning the mess never felt tougher,

Neither her sharp mind nor his strong shoulders.

A soft scream escaped his lips,

a sharp piece of something broken cut into his foot.

She was by his side in a few seconds,

Helping him, mothering him, tending to his wound.

Yet the wound was too deep this time,

The words too sharp.

They sat together on the floor and looked around,

9 years, 137 days, 2 hours and 12 minutes.

The promise to cross the ultimate finish line of life together loomed overhead,

Their intertwined fingers finding it hard to keep them together.

She smiled,

He smiled,

Their hearts sighed.

I wrote this poem in 2019 for a competition but never submitted it because I felt like it wasn’t good enough. 🙈 It isn’t necessarily supposed to be sad, the poem is just about knowing when to give up on things that aren’t working out. Reposting this today since I randomly found this while going through my archives. Hope you like it! ❤️ Happy weekend!

Also, just to confirm, they are both on the verge of death at the end, right? Like I don’t want to have interpreted it wrong 😬

    love like that
    is fiction
    to a man
    whose diction
    is too unreal
    not real
nor how i feel quite often!

  17. I think about this sometimes. When is it okay to give up and when do we have to keep pushing?

Me too. Especially when I’m struggling with something. I was thinking about this from a business context the other day – how do businesses decide to shut shop? I mean how do they decide that they can’t push it along anymore?
