I have been working towards being more sustainable in my ways over the past year. I have consciously made life changes for the better and even started my own sustainable brand. But I’m not perfect – and it isn’t possible yet to be 100% perfectly sustainable for me. My target is to be 50% more sustainable than I was in 2020 by YE2022. These last few weeks, I did slip a little and let myself off the hook. I have been a mess mental health wise which isn’t an excuse to not do my bit for our planet but it is one of the reasons I went off my usual ways. What did I do?
- I shopped for things that I didn’t necessarily need – I needed to buy black leggings but saw these really pretty aubergine corduroy ones from M&S (on 70% off) and gave into my crazy want and bought it. They are really comfy and I’m sure I’ll get a lot of use out of them but it was an unnecessary purchase which wasn’t even a sustainable one.
- I let myself get greenwashed – Greenwashing is when a company represents information in way that you believe that they are a green company or their products are eco friendly but they aren’t. Like I mentioned in my first point – I wanted to get black leggings since the 3 leggings I have all have holes in them that I have been ignoring for months. They are all also 3+ years old. Anyhow, I have a bias for H&M leggings – they are comfortable, cheap and last extremely long (all my old leggings are from H&M). So while browsing I found a pair of black leggings from H&M which they claimed to be are sustainable. What makes them sustainable? The cotton used in them is organic. But since they are are made of a mix fabric – it doesn’t really matter if the cotton is organic since it can’t be recycled. But I convinced myself to get the leggings anyways.
- I switched shampoos to a non sustainable shampoo – I have been using different sustainable shampoos and conditioners since December last year but unfortunately none of them worked for me. I have been having A LOT of hair loss for the past 2 months and ultimately I gave in and bought a non sustainable shampoo.
- I haven’t been vegan in 3 weeks – I’ve been craving a lot of desserts over these past 3 weeks so I let myself go a little and just enjoyed non-vegan desserts.

The idea behind sharing this is that just because you slip sometimes – it doesn’t mean you have to give up on the journey. A lot of people make it sound like leading a 100% sustainable life is easy but it isn’t. There aren’t sustainable options available always and sometimes the sustainable option just isn’t feasible. But as I say in all my sustainability posts – if we all become 50% more sustainable in our ways – all 7 billion+ of us – that would ensure a better planet for atleast the next few centuries. Maybe the future generations will have a chance at leading 100% sustainable lives because of the changes we make today! 🙂

You are so right! You can always start again. Nothing unheard of, but having a great reusable water bottle and saying no to plastic forks with take out are two of my go-tos🌺

Reusable cutlery, shopping bags, bottles – are all amazing ways to cut down on single use plastic! Thanks for reading! ❤

These do seem relatable. Of course, I’m not going to try to be vegan or something (clearly I revert back to my old ways), but you’re right.
We can still start afresh, right?

Definitely! So I know I find it hard to be vegan everyday – so I try to be vegan 5days/week and let myself enjoy dairy products on the weekend.
I’ve restarted on my sustainable living plan and I am doing well already! 🙂

People slip every now and then. But you’re right. We can start again. And yes even if someone does even a little bit, it can go a long way especially if everyone else follows suit. Every action matters no matter how small it is! Our planet is counting on us!

So true! If the whole world follows this way then it’d be so great for the next generations and they would do even better.
Btw, did you get my email?

It’s sooooo hard! The easy ones I do are grocery shopping with my own re-usable bags. If I forget my bag, I will actually go back to the car to get it. It just kills me not to use it. I try to recycle everything recyclable, and try to re-use containers for other things around the house. But gosh, yeah, it’s hard to be 100% perfect. Thank you for championing this and for just bringing it to everyone’s attention. It’s just so important. Maybe the most important thing there is!!!! xo

I’ll have to keep an eye out for greenwashing from now on. Companies are so good at bending the truth to sell things.

Thank you for bringing attention to this topic, I have gone through a similar issue with hair products it’s definitely a struggle to find sustainable products that work in the same way! The small steps each of us take do have an impact and better than doing nothing at all. Trying to go all in 100% is enormous amount of pressure to put on ourselves

It is hard to live sustainably and slips are not the end of the world. And, you are not carrying the full weight of the world. There are others trying as well.

Greenwashing should be considered false advertising- it’s so unethical.

You are an inspiration. Thanks for doing your bit for the environment. We need more people like you. Not many people compromise on their guilty pleasures for the environment. Such as in your case, the dessert. I liked the message “Just because there’s been a break does not mean you give up.” You are an inspiration 🤍

Thank you so much! 🙂
I think it is a difficult journey and it is good to acknowledge that but keep working towards making small changes. ❤
Hey, I've tried accessing your blog posts through your home page but the 'Read Blog' and 'Explore Portfolio' buttons don't work. You might want to check on that. 🙂 Though I found an alternate way to access your blog posts.

Firstly, thanks a million for checking out my site and secondly, thanks for notifying me about that. I’m fairly new at WordPress and still working to find my way around things. It doesn’t help being technically challenged. 😅 Again, thanks tonnes 😁🙏

You are right, Moksha. It is a journey and a challenge. We do the best we can and try again in case. Definitely not easy!

I have the same issue with trying to cut back on spending. Its easy to beat yourself up for not being perfect but we tend to forget just how far even 50% can get us in the long run. Certainly better then not trying in the first place
