Recently while listening to my playlist in the gym (yeah – I’m going to flex about working out) I had this weird epiphany. My playlist was on shuffle and this old romantic song came up which reminded me of this guy I had dated 2 years back. And with that came this realization that with every guy I kind of dated (by dated I mean went of dates for 3-4 months) – I had a special song that I heard on loop while dating them and then forgot about. Sometimes if I liked a guy too soon, I’d associate a song with him too and then find it too hard to listen to if we didn’t end up dating. Funnily, there was always one particular paragraph in the song that I’d associate with the boy and keep re-listening to. So this blog is to all the boys I loved before sharing the songs that I associate with each of them – in the hopes that if they ever read this post it brings a smile to their face and that if you are newly dating/crushing on someone maybe you find a song to relate with your situation.
(I’m going to leave a rough translation of the main portion for people who don’t understand Hindi & Punjabi.)
To That Main Man
I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned before, but I’ve only been in love love with one guy in my entire being. When we started talking, we instantly clicked and I was in love a few days into us being friends (ah, to be young and stupid). So I heard this song right about when I was starting to fall in love and its lyrics just felt so so relatable. It was a Punjabi song called ‘Soch’ by Hardy Sandhu. And the lyrics that resonated with me were this one portion which translated is roughly – “he can live without taking breaths but can’t live without his lover for even a moment“. Yes, I was extremely cheesy (and stupid).
To That ‘Almost’ The One
Sometimes it feels like the entire world conspires to get you to meet someone and sometimes it feels like the entire universe is conspiring to keep you apart. When my ‘almost’ the one was in my life I constantly listened to this song called ‘Baari’ by Bilal Saeed and Momina Mustehsan. It talks about being scared to fall in love again and giving love a chance again and is such a beautiful song. My favourite part (that I can listen to a million times) is this portion – ‘Tu Jiye Te Teri Aayi Aap Mar Laange’ – meaning – for you to live, I’d give you my lifespan. Isn’t that beautiful? :’)
To The Last One
If you read my last dating post , I talked about being in a conundrum between two guys and choosing the drama free one while being hugely attracted to the other guy. This is for the one I didn’t choose. First, how is there an appropriate Taylor Swift song for EVERY single situation. The song ‘That’s The Way I Loved You’ so exactly describes the situation I was in and I’ve heard it on repeat SO many times. And the paragraph that resonated with me is –
He can’t see the smile I’m faking
And my heart’s not breaking
‘Cause I’m not feeling anything at all
And you were wild and crazy
Just so frustrating, intoxicating, complicated
Got away by some mistake and now
To The One In The Middle
This was a very brief story but it started off fast and had me swept off only to end very soon too. During our brief time dating, we both used to relate the song ‘Heaven’ by Bryan Adams with each other since we both were fairly into each other and thought that after ALL the terrible dates we had been to, we had finally found each other (ARGHHH, it is so embarrassing to even type this). Favourite portion –
I’ve been waitin’ for so long
For somethin’ to arrive
For love to come along
Now our dreams are comin’ true
Through the good times and the bad
Yeah, I’ll be standin’ there by you
To THE ONE
While I don’t have the perfect song picked out for you, I do have this scene from ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (yeah I am starting to feel A LOT like TED :D) from before he is going to meet the mother. He narrates about how he’d go to the mother and tell her that “we’re going to meet in 45 days but I’m here right now because I want those extra 45 days”. I FEEL THAT!
Have you heard any of these songs? What are the songs associated with your partner or a crush? Share below so I can add them to my ‘sappy’ playlist. 🙂

Girrrllll I feel like I’m there with you and single again, this brings back so much reality for me!! Soooooooo many dumb and short-lived romances / crushes that sometimes didn’t even involve dates for me! And yes I 💯 would attach songs to men and even entire albums. Ps I LOVE that Bryan Adam’s song! And the fact that you both thought u found each other but it didn’t work out is so painful ugh. Keep hanging on, you will find each other! A song that stands out for me is by Florence and the Machine called Delilah, when I was obsessed with this guy and he would text then disappear then reappear over and over. The lyrics are:
Another drink just to pass the time
(I can never say no)
Cause I’m gonna be free and I’m gonna be fine
(Holding on for your call)
Cause I’m gonna be free and I’m gonna be fine. But maybe not tonight!

Oh, to be young and in love, indeed. How is it that music becomes more relatable when there is someone in our lives? And congratulations on the working out habit!

So relatable!!! With each relationship I’ve been in, I have a song association and each time I hear that song now I think of the person /relationship… Music can be so nostalgic and powerful!
Our first dance wedding song was “By Your Side” by Sade and whenever the songs “Marry Me” by Bruno Mars and “Ho Hey” by Lumineers always make me think of my husband!

I really thought I was the only weirdo who associated each man with a song. 🙈
I haven’t heard “By Your Side” – but going to listen to it right now. ❤️
