If you’re a regular reader, you know that I am quirky and I like it. I’ve recently joined the gym again (wow, it is almost going to be 2 months) and I’ve noticed that I have a few quirks in my gym routine. Here are some –
- I really don’t like it when someone starts working out on the machine right next to the one I am on. I usually pick odd hours to go to the gym to avoid it being too crowded because of this quirk. But I’ve noticed that some people like working out near people (isn’t that weird?). I usually go for the corner treadmill in the row of 10 treadmills in my gym. A couple of times despite all 9 other treadmills being unoccupied, someone has come and started working out on the one right next to me. I really don’t get why they’d do that, more so now when maintaining some social distancing is imperative.
- I don’t like people watching me while I’m working out. I don’t know if this is a quirk but I get super uncomfortable if someone is looking at me while I am jogging all sweaty or holding a plank and making the weirdest in-pain expression. If someone watches me while I’m walking on the treadmill – I start walking all weird like I’ve forgotten how to walk!!

- I like wearing baggy clothes while working out. While most people like wearing fitted clothes to the gym, on the contrary I really like wearing oversized, baggy clothes while working out – somehow feels more comfortable and breathable to me.
- I use up a lot of clothes that I don’t like wearing regularly by wearing it to the gym. As long as it is comfortable, I wear all the clothes I usually don’t end up wearing to the gym. Like my oversized denim jacket below . The jacket is 15 years old and I’ve probably worn it 10 times but it is such good quality that I don’t feel like giving it away. (I obviously don’t work out with the jacket on.)
- I like wearing quirky tees to the gym. I have this really cute tee that has a couple of yaks and it says yak-yak-yak (photo reference above you can see the yak peeping through). The number of weird looks I get when I wear this to the gym. I have a lot of fun tees that I wear to the gym instead of just regular gym clothes.
- I don’t like talking to anyone in the gym. I am introvert but I really really don’t like talking to anyone during my gym time. I hate when I’m huffing and puffing and a stranger wants to make small talk.

- I dislike getting unsolicited advice in the gym. If a trainer finds the need to correct my form or work out routine – I am totally okay with it. But I really find it annoying when a random person decides to tell me what work out to do because xx is my problem area.
I am a quirky person and there are just some things that I find plain annoying. What are some of your quirks around working out? Do you relate with any of mine?

But the rest of the people in the gym seem to like to work out right next to other people and it makes me feel so abnormal. Glad to know I am not the only one who feels like that. 🙂

Yes to all of these honestly! Leave me alone, don’t look at me, don’t look at my body, don’t talk to me!

YESSS!!! Maybe I should get a tee printed with this on it so other people get it too. 😀

Omg yes please that would be amazing!!! 🤣 Not sure if that would draw more attention or less though, ha! 🤔

So glad to hear the gym is working out for you. 2 months and counting, well done! I understand your quirks and totally support comfortable gym clothes. I suppose what boggles me is people who wear makeup at the gym. I don’t understand it.

OMG same! I am also always curious about what make-up they use that doesn’t run with all the sweating!! 😀

In all honesty, nothing about this is quirky! I always wondered why people prefer tightly-fitted clothes over breathable, comfy ones? For each their own Ofcourse. But I DEFINITWLY prefer what you prefer- loose and comfy, especially when working out.
As for having a person right next to you, it can get really peevy! But personally, I enjoy it, especially if it is in a treadmill, and ESPECIALLY if it is a man! I like teasing his damned male ego by going “uncatchably” fast lol 🤣 And I keep up with it until I’m assured that they’re annoyed. Let them watch me huff and puff but my point is: I’M THE MAN HERE.
As for the small talk, whattt?? You’re unlucky if people try to talk to you. South Asians usually excel at ignoring each other and small talk isn’t really a thing here. If globalisation has resulted in this, I HATE globalisation! Why is the world getting harder and harder for introverts? 😪

Haha, I usually feel pressured by how much and how fast the person on the next treadmill is going and try so hard to keep up. 😀 😀
I think women who come alone to the gym try to find like a companion to feel more comfortable. The women to men ratio at my gym is really sad probably 1 is to 4. But I literally just go to do my work out and leave. Even my friend who goes to the gym with me – I don’t even talk to her while working out.

I love wearing quirky t-shirts too! I don’t like people giving unsolicited advice too. My gym at university had a lot of older people there and it was like I several sets of grandparents!

Haha! Unsolicited advice is so annoying, so I literally don’t remove my earphones the entire time, so no one approaches me. 😀

Love this post! I’m like you on all but one point- I like to wear tight fitting clothes if I’m gonna run because there’s less resistance that way 😂

Yeah! And it’s not comfortable to sweat on clothes that are not tight to your body…I try to make sure that at least in a week a dedicate maybe three days to jogging but hey! It’s difficult making time but I try.

Ah, I usually wear cotton joggers and well, jog 😀
I hate the feeling of wet cloth against my skin – I can’t explain it.
But I am so glad to know that others relate with all this – I thought I was the only one who wanted to not be bothered at the gym.

As someone who goes to the gym a lot, I’m a lot like you. The worst is when some stranger comes up, chooses the machine next to me, and tries to make conversation while I’m huffing and puffing.

I KNOWWW!!! I’ve almost fallen off the treadmill once because someone decided to talk to me mid jog. I really don’t get how people socialize at the gym – it is the one place where I just don’t get the need to do so.

You sound like an introvert and you really like your space which is cool but sometimes when in public you have to make peace with a fact that people will crump your space. Any way I personally can relate to you alot.💕

Yes, yes ofcourse I understand that in public people will invade my public space even more so because I live in a super crowded place like India. 😀
I just don’t get it when there is an option not to do it and people still do it. Like I get everyone wants to get into the elevator at the same time cause no one wants to wait for the next one but I don’t get why someone would want to share the same escalator rung. 😀

I can relate to you! Especially when it comes to working out around people. Even if no one is really watching me workout, I still feel so insecure. That’s also one reason why I don’t workout with my family!

When im at the gym, I never want to talk to anyone. I take gym as therapy and sort of my alone time. So talking to people will invade my privacy

I also try to go when my gym is less full. I like Sunday mornings for the empty sauna where I simply sit, sweat and think.
