Books That Got Me Out Of My Reading Slump

After having a great run in the first half of the year, I slowly got into a reading slump and ended up not reading a single book in the past 3 months. I tried to switch between 5-6 books, got physical books, tried audio books but I just couldn’t put my mind to it. With winters and Christmas in the air, I tried to get back to reading and read my first 2 books in the last four months. These two books were light reads from very different genres and had me hooked. I am so glad to be out of my reading slump and I am hoping to read two more books before the year is over. It would take my total to 22 books this year which is far less than my 30 books target but still a decent number for me. So which were the books that got me out of my reading slump?

A Pinch of Magic by Michelle Harrison

Plot: This book revolves around three sisters – Betty, Charlie and Fliss who are from the Widdershin family whose women are bound by a curse. The three sisters embark on the journey to break the curse and free their family.

Review: This was such a feel good, drama free, fun book. It was a light read and I finished the book in two sittings. It isn’t perfect in terms of the explanation of magic and time travel but it was a fun read and I could overlook those issues.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Plot: The beautiful and elusive Hollywood star, Evelyn Hugo, decides to have a tell all interview with the relatively unknown journalist, Monique Grant. At the age of 79, with little to lose, Evelyn discusses her life, many loves, husbands, stardom and more

Review: I really liked the plotline of the book. It has been written in a very engaging way to keep readers hooked. It is also nice to see the realities of being a celebrity being laid out – showing that it isn’t all fun and glamourous. The ending and her 7th husband were unnecessary in my opinion. But overall the book was a really interesting read. (I want to say more but I think I won’t be able to without spoiling the book.)

So help my reach my goal of reading 2 more books before the year ends – leave your recommendations for light reads/short stories/fun reads in the comments below. I’m also big on mythological fiction – so any recommendations for that genre would be great.

PS: My next post is going to be my 300th POST!!!!! Any suggestions on what I should write?

  2. Thanks for sharing! I would recommend the palace of illusions by Chitra Divakaruni. I wasn’t enthusiastic about reading it but when I did, the book definitely had me hooked for a while.

Chitra’s books are amazing! Read most of them but my favourite is The Forest of Enchantments. I think it shocked me to look at the Ramayana from Sita’s perspective and really understand the things the women went through. Thank you for the recommendation! Definitely check out ‘The Liberation of Sita’ by Volga. It is a very short read but it is BEAUTIFUL!

      1. That sounds interesting! Thanks for recommending! I guess most of those Indian epics overlooked the women’s perspectives.

It is a really interesting and light read – perfect to get you out of the reading slump. There is just something about Hollywood in the 70s that is so intriguing and glamourous.

It has taken a LOT of time and DNF-ing so many books before I finally got here. I have DNF-ed 8 books in the last 4 months.
