May 2022 Life Update: Trying Out New Hobbies & Skills

After spending April in purgatory, I decided to get my life going again and pick up some new hobbies and skills this month. My way of working around my anxious phases has been to just be lazy and watch re-runs of favourite shows. But this time I want to try keeping myself extremely busy and see how that works with my anxiety. I wanted to pick up some fun and useful skills/hobbies that would be helpful in the long run – helpful to me and hopefully, helpful to the planet as well. (Read about my sustainability journey here.)

So what hobbies and skills?

COMPOSTING

I’ve been meaning to get a compost bin for a while and so this month, I finally started on my composting journey. (Why composting? Because our wet waste ends up decomposing anaerobically, meaning without access to oxygen, in landfills which leads to them emitting greenhouse gases.) I’m excited to see how this turns out. I’ve got 2 compost bins and a terrace garden filled with plants waiting for the compost. I’ll give an update on the compost situation in a post in July.

CYCLING

I got a cycle!!!! I’ve been planning for the last few months to cycle to work every day. I’m not sure how feasible it is since Delhi is burning up and the traffic situation is bad. But I’m going to practice cycling (in traffic) over the next few months and hopefully start cycling to work in the winter months.

MAKING MACRAME PRODUCTS

Fun macrame earrings

Ok, ok – I know the earrings aren’t wow – but I love them! These were the first macrame earrings I tried and it was so much fun. I upcycled an old pair of hoops too (photo below) just to jazz them up enough to want to wear them and I love how they turned out. I’ve just started with basics right now but hope to level up and make prettier things soon.

Upcycled these hoops

These are the hobbies/skills that I picked up this month. I also want to learn how to crochet and sew! I’ll pick those up a few months down the line. What are some hobbies/skills that you are learning or want to learn?

  1. Will be waiting for the compost update! I’m so glad that you’re doing this and trying new hobbies. Cycling is great, I’ve been thinking of doing the same for a month now but this summer laziness is not letting me go yet😂, Delhi must be burning up so take care.
    I love macrame earrings!

Thank you. I’ll definitely give an update once the compost is ready.

It is so hot. I try to go early morning or post 10PM – otherwise it is impossible to cycle.

    Composting is a great idea!!
As is cycling. Much better to be creative than passively sit watching re-runs. I can’t even wait to see your next craft project.

  5. Sounds like some great hobbies! Good luck with composting. There have been some things I have had to learn the hard way, and also how it’s important to be careful that rats don’t go after it

Ooooh. I’ll definitely keep that in mind. If our home gets infested because of me – my folks will kill me. 🙈

Yess! Other than the fact that it is so hot that I’m not able to cycle for more than 2-3 kms at a stretch. But I am so happy that I got the bike.

      Thank you ❤️

I love how you put composting into a hobby category! I suppose it can be when one goes through the whole cycle… and cycling, what a fun way to get exercise and even commute! Bravo! Loving the macrame earrings! didn’t even know it was a thing until I saw the cute ones you made!

When I look at it as a chore, then I feel lazy to put the efforts into composting. But looking at it as a hobby has me pumped up.

Aww, thank you. I hope I get better at making them.

Lol! I love the mind-shift! It makes such good sense to me! The “I get to do this” instead of “ I have to”. 😎😎

  8. I love all of these! I’m obsessed with composting although I’ve never done it! But it always kills me throwing away organic material that could turn into beautiful compost. Someday when I have a yard! And those earrings are ADORABLE! As for me, I JUST reached out to someone to learn how to golf! I dunno why the idea popped into my head and I was like YES! It’s a bit pricey so I’m not sure how this will go since things are sooo tight $$$. But I really want to learn and think I could be good. We shall seeeeeee ⛳️ such a fun post!

Oooooh! Golfing sounds fun. My dad’s always tried to get me interested because he thinks all business hot-shots golf. I’d love to hear about your experiences and maybe give it a try too (for fun).

I don’t do composting, even though I should since it help with gardening. As for finding a new hobby, not looking for one right now. My art has kept me busy along with school. Would love to learn how to play an instrument.
