Us, humans, have worked so hard to create a world filled with so many magnificent things that can easily become addicting. From tangible things like food to intangible things like social media – we are surrounded by beacons calling us to them. While my addictions keep changing by the season here are 4 addictions that I just find impossible to fight off –
SUGAR
Sugar high is THE real high. Okay, I shouldn’t be making that declaration since I haven’t tried a lot of other high inducing items. While I definitely enjoy wine’s happy high (kids, please read this as: grape juice) but nothing compares to the high I get after demolishing a slice of cheesecake or even just a whole bar of dark chocolate. I’ve reduced my sugar intake a lot over the past couple of years but it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to cut off completely. At some point in my day I need me some sugar or I just can’t deal with the day. I can reduce my intake but I can’t totally cut off from sugar.
BINGE WATCHING CONTENT
I need to have something constantly playing even if it is just as background music while I go about doing my work. I have gotten into this habit of leaving a show on to just drown out my thoughts with the incessant noises of a show I’ve already enjoyed watching. I also am addicted to a few youtubers and end up binge watching their content from time to time. I NEED content, I just can’t do without Netflix and Youtube and Prime Video and Disney+ and…more content!
CAFFEINE
If you approach me to talk to me before I’ve had my cuppa coffee – God help you! I am a demon who is only able to reign in their terror with the help of caffeine! I literally cannot function without coffee – adulting is hard enough but doing it without coffee is impossible. Literally the only good thing about being an adult is that you can have coffee and cake whenever you want. Again, I have managed my addiction a lot and I am usually able to function on just 1 cup of coffee in the morning but I need that 1 cup for sure.
OVERTHINKING
Where is my overthinker gang at? No matter how hard I try to stay away from getting lost in the spiral of my thoughts – there are still nights when I stay up till 5AM with my mind spinning tales that I can’t control. Overthinking is definitely an unconscious addiction but it is a habit that has been SO SO hard to kick.
Do you battle any of these addictions? What are some things and habits that you battle hard to not be addicted to?
Have you read my recent posts? No? Go read them now!
I will definitely agree with you with the overthinking point. Whenever I get slightly from the routine work, overthinking comes into play. Rather, I try to keep myself busy or engage in some activities that help me avoid overthinking.

Same! I try to keep myself busy but it’s usually at night when I’m trying to sleep that my brain goes into deep overthinking mode. 🙈🙈

The opposite happens with me at night, I went into complete sleep mode as soon as I get on the bed 🙂

Hahaha I was like you on fighting caffeine. I literally could not live without a cuppa coffee 🥰🥰🥰
I then discovered that by quitting gradually and that by finding good substitutions and only drinking coffee occasionally i felt much healthier and happier.

Ooh, do share your recommendations for what you’ve replaced coffee with!

I’m with you on three of those four. Luckily, I’ve always managed to exercise with binge watching TV shows. But yeah, a slave to the rest!

Cheers on the other three! I think my binge watching has worsened in this past year because of being home a lot more. 🙈

Amazing post, Di. As always 😁

Thanks, Nehal! 🤗❤️

What an honest post. There was a time when sugar was getting a really bad name, being blamed for everything, but now I’m not so sure. Maybe you’re a hummingbird and need the sugar to function 😛
Salt’s my sugar. Thinned out blood is good blood, right?

I think it’s the dentist appointments that scare me off sugar. 🤣
Ah, salt- it’s funny how they scare you off everything and then they discover some deficiency. 🤷🙈

A limited amount of everything is joy. It is all about time when you would want to change it you will change it. Lately I had been addicted to K dramas to an extent that sleep was nowhere in my schedule. Was hard to fight yet I did and now no more of Ks and dramas. 😀

Oooh K dramas! Hyun Bin! 😍 Crash Landing is the only K drama I’ve seen.
Wow – that’s amazing! I think I’ve controlled most of these addictions but saying bye to them completely is not happening soon.

That is great that you have control over them. Otherwise its trouble. I am off K dramas now. Purely Asian cliche story line. Just some were different and touching.

Overthinker gang here ✋… I have such an addictive personality… Soon as I find something that is good /works /benefits me /makes me feel good. I’m HOOKED! This isn’t great bc I’m addicted to coffee (expensive), junk food (weight issues), youtube (can be a time killer)!
But at least we’re being self-reflective and hopefully that means change is on the horizon 🙂

Same!!!! And there are so many things that can become addictive so fast like social media. I spent 4 hours on IG yesterday! 🙈🤦🥺
True – as long as we’re aware of our habits and working towards changing them.

I’m trying to trade my morning coffee for green tea but still need a bit of coffee before doing anything else. Its so difficult once your body gets used to it…

I’ve tried that too but by mid-day my body would crave for coffee so bad that I’d just give in. 🙈🤷
I indulge in one cup of coffee these days and then avoid it for the rest of the day.

I think coffee and overthinking go hand in hand for me. Too much coffee especially late in the evening triggers my overthinking! 🙈

I can relate with you on the binge watching content. I can’t even tell you the amount of time I have wasted on Netflix and prime.🤣I may not be addicted to caffeine but I am a hardcore tea lover and can’t go without it for a single especially during exams.

Same! I’m amazed at how much content I consume in a day!! 🙈🤷
Ooh I’ve tried replacing coffee with tea but it doesn’t work for me. It’s quite surprising cause my entire family are tea addicts and I’m the only coffee drinker.

I’d add reading to the list!!
And over thinking is a habit
LikeLiked by 1 person
I contemplated adding reading but considering I spend more time binge watching, I skipped it. 🙈
Overthinking is a difficult habit to get over. 🤷🙈

Oh good
Yes, every night same episode of me making a mountain of things which are actually as small as an ant. That’s why I read at night to give my over thinking brain a rest

I was not expecting overthinking to be here, but it’s definitely an addiction in a way. It’s a bad habit that can have a negative effect on one’s life. I overthink a lot and it’s also a huge time-waster for me.

Same. I especially hate it when I start overthinking right before bed time. Then I spend hours tossing on my bed unable to switch my mind off. 🤦

I overthink everything. Such a burden, and so hard to break the habit.

Same. It’s such a difficult habit to break out of. I try not to for a few days but eventually give up and have a mini-melt down. 🙈🤷

Same! It’s like I can’t go more than a week without reverting to the old habit, or I get really bad anxiety and wonder what I’m missing or what ball I’m dropping. But I keep trying. I’ve found that planners and to-do lists help, but I don’t think I’ll ever be one of those fortunate few who can just go with the flow.

Hehe I used to drink 8 cups of coffee a day and now I’m down to one cup a day – so I feel like it’s not too bad to be addicted to one cup. Controlled addiction is fine no?
I’m the total opposite – I don’t watch movies at all. They are too long for me to sit and watch in one go. 🙈🤣

Overthinker here, those 3 am thoughts are always there and it’s so hard to stop. And I am absolutely addicted to caffeine 😂😂 i just love coffee and now I can’t go a day with out it. Horrible, I know. I’ve been trying to drink matcha a couple days a week so I have a better come down from the caffeine.

How’s that going? I’ve wanted to try replacing coffee with some alternate too but nothing as worked till now.

It’s going well! I would say it’s an either you love it or you hate it drink but, the come down off the caffeine isn’t as drastic as coffee.

I totally get these addictions, they control us as much as any other kind! I’ve been working on mine over the years and feel I’ve gotten a few successes.
I used to be so addicted to sugar that I continuously sucked on a hard candy. Then I heard that we can crave sugar if we’re low in some nutrients (I forget exactly what now, but I think it’s Googleable.) I heard that eating some protein helps with low blood sugar, so I make sure I eat some when I’m feeling lightheaded. I’ve been paying attention to taking supplements to support my immune system and when I take my B-complex, C and fish oil capsules I feel better and have way less cravings!
Coffee? Both my daughter and I were coffee fiends in the am but sometime during the pandemic we lost our need for it. We switched to tea. I’ve discovered that adding 1/4-1/2 tsp of ginger powder and matcha to my tea instead of milk helps my digestion and the ginger is helping my joints as it’s an anti-inflammatory.
Overthinking? I’ve been working on positive affirmations during the day to help calm my mind and having been very anxious before this has helped. I also take 3 15mg CBD capsules with melatonin before bed and that’s been helping me fall asleep and it helps calm the mind and restless legs! Plus I take a couple of other herbal capsules to help the legs.
I’ve felt very empowered to be able to tackle and be handling these issues which were consuming me before (and were another thing I’d beat myself up over!)
Blessings!
Tamara

Compltely agree with you on sugar and overthinking! I can’t possibly go a day without sugar, I just miss it so much! Overthinking is definitely harder to fight as it is unconscious (and I don’t *want* it like I want a piece of chocolate at the end of every meal for instance)! I find that I am quite good with Netflix and other shows though, as I am really not a binge-watcher! 😊

By the way, I don’t think any of the addictions are difficult to overcome at all, as long as you convince yourself that these addictions are incredibly bad by writing your own blog posts about them.

Candid post here friend. I like how brave you are in sharing this post. The term addiction connotes something that has become maladaptive, and possibly, might even be disrupting the person’s life in one way or the other. Addictions can be hard to deal with, however, there are ways around it. Firstly, it is important to ask questions such as what leads me to this addiction? For many addictions, there is an underlying cause. For example, a person might drink a lot when they think of how much they have been bullied. They are drinking and might be addicted to drinking as a way to express their grief, but the drinking is a symptom of their worrying about their bullying. if they stop worrying about the bullying, they’ll stop drinking, you get the gist. Secondly, forums where people with similar addictions gather can be useful, so long as they do not praise the addiction and say it is okay. You can see how they are coping. Additionally, people who used to formerly have the addiction, but who no longer have it, can be a great resource, because you can ask them how they overcame it. Just google the addiction and google for people who have overcome it. Lastly, God is the King. God is able to help us to overcome many of the things that tie us down and weigh us down, yes, even addictions.
The Bible says in Hebrews 2:18 in reference to Jesus:
“Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted”.
God is able to help, and he would love to connect with you.
If anyone reading is interested in building a relationship with God, I have a post on that here: https://christcenteredruminations.wordpress.com/2018/08/29/how-to-build-a-relationship-with-god/
There is much more to know about God. I post frequently on my blog about topics related to God. You are welcome to follow my blog to keep up with my content.
