My April Reads

My target for the rest of 2022 is to read atleast 3-4 books every month. The problem is that I usually don’t pick up a book till halfway through the month, then start panic reading books and then usually fall in love with the book and spend entire nights reading. I want to read more in the first half of the month! Honestly, posting these monthly updates is making sure I don’t spend all my time binge-watching shows. So this month, I read 3 books. It could have been 4 but I started trying to read these 3 other books and just couldn’t get past the first 20 pages! I hate when books have a slow start because getting through the first 50 pages is like getting over the hump. Once I’m past that, I usually end up reading the whole book. So which three books did I read this month?

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

If you read my last post, I mentioned reading this book and how it impacted me. I only picked this book up because I saw at least a hundred bookstagrammers post about it on Instagram. Bloggers have been raving about Colleen Hoover’s books – so I decided to pick this one up.

‘Lily has had a difficult childhood but when she moves to Boston, starts her own business, and starts dating the gorgeous neurosurgeon, Ryle, everything seems to be falling into place. But is it?”

Review: Trigger warning – this book deals with domestic violence. I really liked how sensitively the author dealt with the issue of domestic violence. The book actually made me understand the victims’ point of view a little better. The storyline had a decent pace and kept me hooked. I have to say that I didn’t feel very connected with the lead characters. I think Atlas is the only one that I liked a little. There are some aspects of stories that make them more realistic and relatable. I did not find the realism in this story. {SPOILER ALERT} Small town girl moves to the big city, starts a business and it is a success overnight or small town boy moves to the big city and has a Michelin star restaurant and a huge mansion – these are pretty unrealistic storylines, at least for me. This makes the story a little less relatable to me. But I definitely recommend reading this book.

They Both Die At The End By Adam Silvera

Again, another book that I saw on some blogger’s recommended list and decided to read it. I have to say that the first 50 pages are so painfully slow-moving. I tried reading this book a couple of times before but just found the slow pace a little annoying. But I finally finished reading this book this month.

“Matteo and Rufus receive the death call on 5th September, letting them know that they have less than 24 hours to live. When they find each other on the Last Friend app, they decide to make the best of their last day.”

Review: I loved the plot of the book. I like the two protagonists and since they are teenagers, their last day is more realistic. The activities, their feelings, their wishes – all feel relatable. But I have to say that the pace of the book frustrated me. I felt like the story was going nowhere in some bits. I skipped through bits to get to the parts where the story was moving forward. Overall, it was an okay-ish one-time read for me. I was expecting it to be a tearjerker and a book that left me thinking about life.

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

I think I was most excited for this book out of the three I read this month. If you’ve read any of my previous monthly reading updates, you might recall that I love a good thriller. I found this book on a list of thriller book recommendations that compared the book to ‘Gone Girl’ and I was sold.

‘Lo Blackhole is still reeling from the trauma of a recent break-in when she leaves for a luxury cruise tour as part of her journalist job. Anxious, drunk, medicated and sleep-deprived, Lo is woken up in the middle of the first night on the cruise by a woman’s scream and the sound of what she assumes to be a body being thrown overboard. But no one on the cruise is missing.”

Review: The first three-quarters of the book is amazing! The author adds a lot of elements to keep you hooked. I love the characters, the setting, and the protagonists’ back story. I love how Lo isn’t a like-able character which makes you doubt her version of events throughout the story. The mystery is built up really well and will have you at the edge till the end. Again, like most thrillers, the end is kind of disappointing. I like the whole reveal part but the ending is over the top and just filmy. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading this book a lot – my favourite read this month.

Yess please! I have such a long TBR pile and yet, every month I’m lost when it comes to deciding what to read next. I think its also because I only allocate a particular amount of time to read and want to spend it reading something good.

      1. That’s fair. With me, I don’t feel any qualms stopping a book that I’m not enthusiastic about. Life’s too short to waste on books that don’t float your boat

That last line "For you a thousand times over" is stuck in my mind even though I read Kite Runner like 15 years back! I love the realism in his books. I only haven't read his illustrated short story – I'll pick that up this month.

The last book I’ve read was it ends with us too! I liked the book, but more importantly the way it portrays actual, realistic problems, like Domestic violence. I just finished reading another book by colleen hoover, november 9. It’s nice if you’re in the mood for a romance that is a bit unrealistic. It’s fabulous though.

  5. Great reviews! I feel the same way about they both die at the end. The starting pace of the story was very slow!
I recently read the cheerleaders by Kara Thomas and absolutely loved it! It’s a murder mystery and has a really engaging storyline.

Right? The first 3-4 chapters I was SO BORED! I also felt like it could have been more emotional. I literally didn’t feel anything while reading the book – and I cry at everything!!!

Oooh – I’m definitely going to check that out!

I read It Ends With Us last month too! The Lessons given in the end were my favorite part. I like how the title of the book was completely different from what I initially thought, it actually was referring to cycles. 🤯
