Netflix Made Me Do It – Shows I Regret Wasting My Time On

I am a huge consumer of online content. Even if I am not actively watching, I like having something playing in the background while I cook or clean, or do laundry. Most times I’ll just leave a favourite show on play and do all my mundane tasks while laughing as some joke plays on in the background. I usually like to watch newer content on YouTube mainly because I end up watching something educational/value-adding as compared to the content I binge on Netflix/Prime. (Do you prefer YouTube or Netflix?) But every now and then, I cave to peer pressure or a tempting storyline and watch a new show, and most of the time I regret doing it. Here are some shows I watched over the past year that I absolutely regretted watching –

  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt “Rescued after 15 years in a cult, Kimmy Schmidt decides to reclaim her life by venturing to New York, where she experiences everyday life with wide-eyed enthusiasm.” I have no words to tell you what a pain it was watching this show. While it had a very interesting premise, the show had the dullest characters (who gave me a headache) and was so exceptionally boring. After the first 5 episodes, I literally let the show run as background music while I did my chores.
  • The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in….- “Watching the world go by from her living room window, heartbroken Anna sets her sights on a handsome new neighbor until she witnesses a gruesome murder.” I can’t be bothered to finish the title and you shouldn’t be bothered to watch this show. I love Kristen Bell – she is a phenomenal actress and I adored her in The Good Place. When Netflix threw up this show as a recommendation two days back, I binged watched the short season 1 mainly because I wanted Kristen Bell’s character to die. Yup, you read that right – I just wanted some axe weilding murderer to get rid of her on the show so it would all just end.
  • And Just Like That – Okay, okay – I know I can’t blame Netflix for this one (glaring at you HBO). The much awaited (by me) Sex and The City revival show is probably the worst thing I’ve watched in a while. From adoring these characters to lowkey despising them – in 9 episodes this revival has ruined the entire show/franchise for me. I am going to break up everything that is wrong with this show –
    • The original show lacked people of colour and non binary people. This revival took it upon itself to add every sort of colour possible (skin and LGBTQ). From an Indian friend, to multiple black friends to an Asian side character. It looks SO forced that it makes a mockery of inclusion.
    • Samantha’s abscence has been explained in the worst way possible. Honestly, I would have been okay with them saying she moved away to a remote part of the world to meditate and is out of touch with the girls but the explanation given is nonsensical. (Also, how they write off Stanford? WHAT EVEN?)
    • Che. Just. CHE!!!!
    • Miranda – {SPOILER ALERT} This is not the Miranada we know from before. A smart, Harvard edcuated lawyer not knowing how to behave around her teacher of colour – WHAT? Cheating on Steve after having been in that situation herself? None of it makes sense! (Steve is probably one of the few likable characters in the revival,)
    • Carrie – The original show had Carrie as the main character but in this revival she is sharing the limelight with many other ladies which doesn’t seem to sit well with her. All her conversations with her friends revolve around her, as soon as it is about someone else – she loses interest. Her best friend is an alcoholic and she just doesn’t seem to care. WHAT?
    • Ageing – we all know that the characters have aged but it seems like the show makers have had a hard time accepting it and so keep bringing it up. Carrie wanting to be hip infront of her young neighbour and feeling smug when she realises that being young isn’t all fun – WHAT EVEN? Almost feels like they are dissing on young people.
    • Charlotte’s face – I get that people get work done but you can’t discern her expressions, only her eyes are emoting.
  • Pretty Smart – “Book-smart Chelsea discovers she has a lot to learn about happiness after moving in with her bubbly sister and three roommates.” While I didn’t dislike this show as much as I disliked the other shows on this list but it is an easily skipable show. It isn’t that funny and the storyline is just plain stupid for the current era. Maybe this type of content was considered funny in the 90s but with SO much good content out there, this show just doesn’t stand a chance.
  • Firefly Lane – Since I’ve done a whole post revieing this show, I will not go into details but boy, was this show annoying. Both the main leads’ performances were annoying but maybe that was because their characters were SO poorly written. The show was a huge let down.

Have you seen any of these shows? What did you think? What are some shows that you regret watching?

Also, here are some shows that I don’t regret watching.

PS: How is it already February?

If you haven’t already, give my other posts some love –

  1. Ahh! I was thinking the same at 12 am today. First, 2021 went away in hurry & now the first month of twnety22.
I prefer YouTube coz I’ve many alternate ways to stream Netflix’s content. However, both of these platform shares one common aspect & that is to pressurize users to opt for their premium services. haha.
Shows I’ve regretted to watch are: Lupin, Ozark & “You”

  2. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one of the best things ever I love it, it’s brilliant! Sorrrry but I disagree about And Just Like That 😬 but we can just agree to disagree. Also I think they wrote Stanford out because he passed away IRL, but I might be wrong πŸ₯Ί I always love hearing others’ thoughts about pop culture though, this was so fun!!!!

Great review! I watched the original Woman in the Window movie, and I was somewhat annoyed for most of it, until the end. I have no desire to watch the girl in the window watching….No thanks. I never watched Sex in the City, but I love your explanation of the revival. I read it with a smirk. LOL!

I don’t watch either Netflix or YouTube that much. My wife and son frequently discuss some Netflix series that I’ve never seen. When I find a good series, I’ll stick with it from start to finish watching 1-2 episodes per day. I mostly use YouTube for my music fix, but I appreciate all the recommendations to avoid.

YT for sure. I hardly watch Netflix. But funnily, YT is trying to force my hand by asking me to turn on my history, so they are no longer giving me recommendations. And it’s helped reclaim my time back, since there’s no endless scroll option. I go in with intent, and watch what I want then leave. Ha!

Thanks for your service. I remember hearing about the Sex and the City reboot and then completely forgot about it. Sounds super cringey. If your show lacks diversity, okay, it was of a certain era, but forced diversity? Yikes.
